Job Description

This position reports to the Clinical Supervisor.  The Mental Health Counsellor will be responsible for providing direct Clinical Intervention and Prevention Services to referred clients in the Child and Family Intervention catchment areas. The Mental Health Counsellor will be based out of the Sioux Lookout office, with considerable travel to the First Nations communities.

Qualifications:

•  Degree in Social Work/Psychology with relevant clinical/counselling experience is required
•  Minimum two years’ experience in the health services environment
•  Specialized courses in specific areas of mental health
•  Experience with video counselling technology an asset
•  Travel is a requirement of this position
•  Ability to manage a case load independently
•  Familiarity with working in acute care situations
•  Knowledge of community resources
•  Excellent computer, written and oral communication skills
•  Excellent time management and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently
•  Experience working with youth, a definite asset
•  Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout Zone is an asset

Responsibilities:
1.  Provide specialized counselling services to the clients as assigned
•   Seeing clients as assigned
•   Conduct initial assessment for all assigned clients
•   Generate and document client progress and treatment plan and evaluate progress of treatment
•   Participating in case management meetings with Supervisor and staff
•   Refer clients to specialized resources when deemed necessary, i.e. psychiatrists, psychologists, art therapist, treatment centers
•   Coordinate care of clients with Zone physicians, community health nurse and resources at the community level
•   Prepare 3 month work plans in advance to ensure all communities are receiving appropriate services in a timely and effective manner
•   Establish and implement a  discharge plan and file closures when appropriate
•   Provide services at the Sioux Lookout office, hospital and in First Nations communities
2. Maintain accurate records by
•  Recording all client contacts on forms indicated as per Clinical Procedures
•  Recording and submitting monthly statistics of clients seen
•  Recording and submitting all required forms as per (SLFNHA) Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority policies (e.g. complying with confidentiality protocols at all times)
•  Recording all statistics, counseling sessions, and client data as required
•  Maintain up to date client reports
3. Participate in ongoing education on mental health issues by
•  Attending workshops suggested by the Supervisor
•  Upgrading on specific mental health issues that require specialized counseling (e.g. sexual abuse)
4  Participate in team building developmental activities by
•  Participating and sharing knowledge and skills with the health team in the area of mental health issues
•  Attending scheduled in-services and meetings as directed by the Supervisor
5. Acts in an educational role by
•  Identifying knowledge gaps in the area of mental health for colleagues and pursuing/taking role in training activities
•  Delivering workshops/seminars on mental health issues in Sioux Lookout with interested groups as directed by the Supervisor
•  Development and implementation of programs that are portable and can be utilized in all communities i.e. Anishinabe parenting models
•  Provide mentoring support to community based mental health workers
6. Ensure accuracy, confidentiality and security of all agency and community records
7. Develop and maintain good working relationships with community based mental health workers.
8. Submit activity report and client statistics on a weekly basis
9. Other duties that may be deemed necessary by your immediate Supervisor
