Job Description

The Approaches to Community Wellbeing (ACW) is a regional resource to First Nations Communities in the Sioux Lookout area.  The Regional Wellness Response Program (RWRP) falls within Approaches to Community Wellbeing. RWRP supports communities to increase public awareness on the following: addiction issues; community healing; and mental health promotion. The Regional Wellness Response Program section of the model also includes the Community Wellness Development Team and the Aboriginal Healing and Wellness Strategy – Community Family Healing Program.


The Health Promoter position will be responsible for working with First Nations communities to enhance capacity and target various strategies aimed at working with the whole community to enhance mental wellness.


•  Completion of a diploma or degree in Social Work, health, or a related field;
•  Work experience and/or education in a health related or mental health area;
•  Excellent English oral and written communication skills, s/he will also possess excellent presentation and facilitation skills;
•  Knowledge of a range of topics related to mental health;
•  Knowledge of the Mental Health Act;
•  The ability to apply learning principles to effectively educate;
•  Understanding of community culture and the value of non-interference;
•  Experience working in First Nations Communities;
•  Ability to communicate in one of the Sioux Lookout area dialects, and/or write in syllabics is an asset;
•  Knowledge of the culture, history, geographical location and health priorities of the First Nations people in the Sioux Lookout Area;
•  Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality is essential;
•  Travel is required.

•  Promote and incorporate planning in conjunction with Regional Wellness Response and Approaches to Community Wellbeing with a focus on the development, implementation, and evaluation of a regional strategy for mental health promotion. Also, to incorporate community feedback into future regional and community-based   programs and initiatives.
•  Work with communities to identify and monitor community priorities and planning around mental health promotion and community wellness.
•  Support communities to develop and implement their own mental health promotion and/or community wellness strategies/approaches.
•  Establish and maintain close relationships with each First Nation community’s leadership and social services/health staff in order to build capacity and work towards improving the mental wellbeing of individuals, families and communities.
•  Work with policy analysts and communities where appropriate to develop and support policies that promote mental health promotion.
•  Work with other Regional Wellness Response and Approaches to Community Wellbeing  staff to develop culturally appropriate education material and mental health promotion campaigns
•  Provide expert advice, technical consultation, and continuing education to SLFNHA staff, key stakeholders, and communities relating to mental health promotion and community wellness.
•  Conduct mental health promotion initiatives through community visits, school visits, videoconferences, webinars, teleconferences, radio shows, etc.
•  Be aware of and up to date about mental health training services in the area to harmonize/leverage approach, as well as promote initiatives and link communities to them
•  To complete a trip report after each community visit, conference and training session attended.
•  Provide assistance when required and other related duties as directed by the Regional Wellness Response Manager
